BONSAI SOCIAL FIRM

Bonsai - The Imagination Tree was acquired from its original owners to become a social firm in September 2006. Now providing life-changing integrated employment opportunities for people otherwise excluded from the workforce by metal illness, the social firm is governed by a small board of honorary directors with generous support of Social Firms Australia, Social Ventures Australia, and Eastern Access Community Health.

Our Monbulk nursery features an outstanding collection of advanced bonsai and is Victoria's leading producer and supplier of quality commercial bonsai material.

BONSAI UPDATE - JUNE 2008

BONSAI DAIRY

Welcome to the official commencement of winter. In SE Australia we and our plants have been well aware of cool shorter days for some time now. Except for the odd die-hard, deciduous trees have generally shed their foliage, so only minimum water is now required very occasionally to prevent roots from drying out. And with many evergreens almost dormant, fertilising now may do more harm than good. So place your bonsai in a sheltered area subject to natural rain and consider going north for a holiday.

FEATURE PLANT

Rhododendron (azalea) varieties
Most of the world's hundreds of Rhododendron species and subspecies are evergreen winter-spring flowering shrubs. The brilliant Satsuki (R. indicum X) and Kurume (R. obtusum X) azaleas are most popular in bonsai, being suited to various styles and responding well to pruning. Kurumes flower in spring and Satsukis in summer. They require a good porous acidic soil (Sashi-Eda® potting mix is ideal) and semi-shade. Watch for red spider mite and avoid prolonged saturation of soil.
